There are several reasons why a PC owner would want to perform a Windows registry clean-up. The registry is a database where the operating system and most applications store information that is vital to the computer’s operation. Information about the users, the installed software, the system hardware, and more resides in the registry. If this information is not correct and up to date, the computer can’t run the way it should. Over time, some of this data starts to lose its accuracy. That is, errors begin to creep into the registry, such as keys pointing to deleted files and uninstalled (or partially uninstalled) applications.

How Can You Know When a Windows Registry Clean-Up Is Needed?

Usually a computer is much faster when it is new. As they age most PCs tend to slow down. Perhaps you have noticed your own PC getting slower. This is one of the signs that it needs attention: disk cleaning, defragmenting, registry maintenance.

Another general indication that your computer needs a Windows registry clean-up has to do with the size of the registry files. When the registry becomes bloated with megabytes of useless data, it will have an effect on the computer’s speed. Simply put, the larger the registry database, the slower the computer will run. Although this rule is not set in concrete, it tends to be true. It takes more time to search larger registry files.

Yet another way to know that your registry needs to be cleaned up or repaired is that your computer begins to fail. Obscure error messages may begin to appear or applications may be abruptly terminated without warning. Perhaps your computer will even crash repeatedly. The information within the registry is essential for proper operation. If the registry becomes corrupted, the computer will probably stop working correctly. An example of an event that can corrupt your registry is when an install or uninstall procedure fails. It may leave you with a huge mess in the registry.

Windows Registry Clean-Up – How?

There are several commonly used methods for cleaning the Windows registry. For many years there has been a program named Registry Editor built into Windows. This rather dangerous program permits users to inspect and modify registry keys and data. This method of cleaning or repairing the registry is quite slow. It requires great patience, expertise, and a good registry backup! After all, how should a user know which of the many thousands of items in the registry should be modified or deleted? This is a job for a very knowledgeable user or technician.

You can also clean the registry by reformatting the hard disk and re-installing Windows and all of the application software. This might be called the “brute force” approach. Not many people choose this method. Sometimes it is the only viable option – a last resort.

The easiest method is to use a registry cleaning/repair tool. These registry cleaners are also the most popular method for performing a Windows registry clean-up.
