Windows Registry Tweaks

Read our Registry Repair Review

There are many customizations you can make to your PC with just a few small Windows registry tweaks. Because of the central role the registry plays in the operation of your computer, it is possible to make important differences by simply editing a few data items in the registry.

Editing the Registry Is a Job For Experts

Windows registry tweaks require patience. Certain adjustments to the registry settings can affect the way Windows looks, feels, and behaves. Of course, it is all too easy to edit the wrong registry key by mistake, or to set it to the wrong value. Usually un-doing such a mistake is trivial (though tedious). However, there are some things in the registry that you really should not touch unless you are quite sure of yourself. After making the wrong modifications to the registry, it may be necessary to reinstall Windows! But there are safer and easier ways to optimize the registry.

First Make a Backup

In any case, you should always make a backup copy of the registry files before you begin tweaking. High-quality registry cleaners and repair tools offer you this capability to backup the registry. There is also a way to copy some of the registry keys using the registry editor that comes with Windows, but that is not a true backup.

The freeware program ERUNT – The Emergency Recovery Utility NT will let you back up and restore the registry easily. ERUNT can even back up your registry automatically at startup time, if you wish.

What Are the Possibilities? *

A few of the Windows registry tweaks you can do will bring visual enhancements. These are things like setting custom colors in Windows Explorer for encrypted or compressed folders.

Other possibilities include turning on smooth scrolling and reorganizing the categories in Control Panel. Many applications store their settings in the registry. Often it is possible to adjust these settings directly in the registry. For example, you can make it possible to run multiple instances of Yahoo Messenger at one time.

There are hundreds of Windows registry tweaks related to hardware, the network, and security. You can stop the PC speaker beeping on errors. You can disable the Windows key. You could disable Plug-and-Play for added security. You can add the option to open your favorites in a separate window. You can prevent automatic modem connections at startup. Some network adapters have a dedicated onboard processor for helping the system CPU. You can enable it by default to increase your system speed. For further details, you can look here.

The Risks *

After making that registry backup, you can start “hacking the registry.” But remember — certain registry changes can render your system unbootable or worse.

If you aren’t sure of the purpose of a particular registry key, it may be wiser to leave that one to the experts.
